An introduction to dressmaking-Make a skirt

You must already be able to use a sewing machine before attending this course

Do you want to start using patterns but haven't a clue about all the terminology?
Are you itching to get started making your own clothes, but struggling to get going?

This class is run as 2 sessions on consecutive Saturday mornings

Pattern choice-

          pattern
At this class you'll work on making a really easy classic A line skirt! Making an a line skirt is a perfect introduction to dressmaking as you will learn how to use an invisible zip, use darts, put on a waistband and do a hem

 Size range is 8-18

This workshop is the perfect follow on session for beginners who are comfortable using a sewing machine, and are looking to start making clothes.
  • During the day you will use a simple skirt pattern to make up your skirt in your own choice of fabric. If you'd prefer you can also make up as a a calico mock up (called a toile)- perfect for nervous dressmakers.
  • You will need to bring along a metre and a half of fabric to make your Skirt.
  • Suitable fabrics are firm woven fabrics, like a good cotton, linen, wool, Denim, silk dupion or raw silk with some firmness.
  • Fabrics to avoid are- silky satins, jerseys, velvet, Anything with too big or obvious a pattern that needs matching(you will need a lot more fabric to do this)
  • You will also need a 9 inch invisible or concealed zip matching your fabric, and if you have an unusual colour, then get some thread to match.
  • Use of All tools and equipment including the pattern, is included in your class fee
  • Ensure you pre-wash your fabric before the class, so that your garment is washable. A medium cotton is a great fabric to get started with, as it is easy to sew, presses well and will give your first project a really professional finish! We can also offer a very limited selection of fabrics on the day.
  • We will help you to cut out all the pattern pieces, and show you how to lay them out correctly on your fabric. As we cut out all your pieces we will explain the pattern markings.
  • Once your project is cut out we will show you how to put together your garment, and teach you any specific techniques required like facings, waistbands, and zips.
  • Before finishing your simple skirt, we will fit it and show you how to apply the adjustments to your skirt.
  • At our studio you have access to a custom built cutting area, so no cutting out on the living room floor! We also have 6 sewing machines and all the haberdashery and sewing tools you will need throughout the day.
Pattern, Tools, use of equipment, calico, interfacings and zips included, just bring enough fabric and notions (zip & Thread) to make your skirt. A selection of fabrics and notions can be bought from us on the day.
Unlimited Tea, Coffee and snacks provided all day, but please do bring a sandwich for lunch.

10 am-1.30 pm on 2 consecutive saturday mornings arrive early as session start promptly
